TITLE:                                    LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST 

 

QUALIFICATION:                    Possess valid Kentucky Teaching Certification w/LMS endorsement

 

REPORT TO/EVALUATED BY: Principal

 

BASIC FUNCTION:                  To provide accesss to information for students and staff that is appropriate to student development, collaborate with teachers so that every student learns to access infroamtion in ways that help him/her achieve classroom objectives, encourage every student to read for information and enjoyment and to provide a welcoming environment conducive to learning.

 

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

 

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Develop short and long-range goals which guide the development of the library media center (LMC)
  2. Develop and implement policies and procedures for the operation of the LMC
  3. Maintain a technologically advanced facility and program
  4. Coordinate the school's implementation of KETS
  5. Supplement the services of the District Technology Coordinator

 

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

  1. Train and supervise clerks, student assistants, and adult volunteers to perform duties efficiently
  2. Select materials and technology for the LMC which support the school's curriculum and educational philosophy
  3. Withdraw obsolete materials
  4. Classify, catalog, process, and organize for circulation: books, other educational media, & technology
  5. Establish and follow procedures for maintenance and repair of all media and technology
  6. Maintain a current inventory of library media center holdings and building hardware and software
  7. Prepare and submit reports to administrators as needed to promote short and long-term goals
  8. Prepare and administer budgets according to needs of the LMC
  9. Evaluate LMC programs, services, facilities, and materials to ensure optimum use
  10. Maintain the LMC to be functional, attractive and an environment which encourages maximum use
  11. Manage student behavior in a constructive manner

 

INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP

  1. Serve as member of KETS school committee
  2. Serve as an instructional resource consultant and media and technology specialist to teachers, students, staff, and council
  3. Establish methods for flexible scheduling of classes and students to promote use by individuals, small groups, and whole classes
  4. Serve on committees involved with designing learning activities for students, curriculum revision, and/ or textbook adoption
  5. Plan and/or participate in special projects or proposals
  6. Plan cooperatively with teachers to incorporate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation
  7. Plan units with teachers which stress whole language and interdisciplinary strategies

                                                                                                        

 

 

PROFESSIONAL

  1. Provide LMC orientation
  2. Provide access to professional materials and information for school staff
  3. Adhere to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations
  4. Submit accurate reports promptly
  5. Participate in various professional organizations which relate to library media and technology
  6. Utilize current research and methods in areas of technology, teaching, learning, and library and information science

 

COMMUNICATION

  1. Make available technology information to the community
  2. Promote a positive relationship with students, staff, and community
  3. Publicize the LMC programs, services and materials through newsletters, announcements, and in other innovative ways
  4. Network with other library media specialists and share resources
  5. Submit to administrators/SBDM and faculty statistical reports which support LMC goals and programs.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
